ZA does not block Firefox and Chrome when it should

Hello all,

I seem to have the opposite problem to many people in that Zone Alarm does not block internet access when it's supposed to. In fact I'm now using Firefox even though the program has been set to block in Zone Alarm. I've been using Zone Alarm (version 9.2.057) and I'm sure it did work for a while. It does block Internet Explorer if I set it to do that but not Firefox or Google Chrome. I only noticed there was a problem because a new program that I knew would want internet access gained it without me being asked by ZA. Since I first installed ZA I've never messed around with the settings so I guess most of them are on the default settings.

I'd appreciate any help that people could provide. I've had a search around the forum and I haven't seen any one else with the same problem but apologies if I've missed a thread on this.

By the way if this is relevant I'm using Windows 7.

Blocking of websites?

Has ZA the feature to block the access to a website permanently?

For example, your child is playing all day long onlinegames or likes to download free trials (for 1 hour) of puzzle-games? And you want to block sites like htp://ww.nogoodforyou.com or ww.musttoavoid.org.

I thought of the menu Firewall - Expert, but don't know how to fill in the various fields. Can anybody help me? Thank you in advance.

How to share resources on a network selectively?

I have a Cisco router as my hub. I have it setup so that guests at my motel have net access. Everything has been working well for a few years. Guests who want access have to ask for the encryption code. Now I'm setting up my wifes laptop to share folders and the printer. Is it possible to set her individual computer to share while still not sharing those resources with the world? I didn't want to jump right in cuz I'm always screwing stuff up . I assume I can set up her IP to share while other IPs on the network don't share. Is this even possible?

ZoneAlarm pages and Hosts File

Since I installed the Hosts File from
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm I cannot access various pages on the ZoneAlarm website.

Examples are Support Centre Knowledge Base, New ZoneAlarm Support Centre pages at

http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/support/technical-support-zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm

and

I cannot find or run the ZoneAlarm uninstall program (XP/2000)

The message I get is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

I installed the Hosts File for extra security, so it's ironic that it's blocking pages on a security website.

Any suggestions?

"Anti-virus/anti-spyware: Error: download error"

When I press "Check for updates" from the main window, it tries to update, and then displays the following message:
"Anti-virus/anti-spyware: Error: download error"

Below this message is displays:
"System: Up to date"

I am running:
ZoneAlarm v9.3.014.000
Windows XP Home Edition v2002 SP3

Any help??

9.2.057 update problem

Ok, so I'm doing some updates on my old home PC (XP Home) Added SP3, and IE8, then went to u/g ZA to latest (9.2.057). ZA appears to load in the system tray. But as soon as I try to start the client it disappears from the system tray. It is not listed in the processes. :eek:
Suggestions?

Has anybody run the GRC ShieldsUP test? I ran it and pased everything except the Ping (ICMP Echo) test.
Does the ZoneAlarm Free suppose to block this or does the paid PRO ZA block it? Just curious :)

Forcefiled alert for youtube

When I went to a video on youtube.com tonight (one that I have viewed many times over the last 2-3 years), FF gave a yellow alert for "www.youtube.com" and said to use caution when downloading, etc. and that the warning was based on the age of the website (registered 2/15/05) and the strength of its security certificate and that it's listed on some spamblocker listings. After browsing to other sites for a while, I went back to the same youtube site and no longer got the warning. What do you think happened?

ZA preventing remote restart?

Win XP SP3. Paid version of ZA with latest updates.
Trying to restart a remote computer which has ZA running. When I use the command line restart (shutdown -r -t 01), I get some error message from ZA about Vector. Could ZA be preventing a restart? It shuts down fine. Are there any settings in ZA I need to change to permit a remote restart?

ForceField settings say the virtualisation routine uses encryption. I assume therefore, that all files in the folder are encrypted. I have 3 questions:
1. What is the strength of the encryption;
2. Does all data following use of the "clear" button remain encrypted after deletion; and
3. There has been mention in other threads of the "clear" button being a "clean" button, implying secure wiping or similar, but I don't think this is the case.......or is it?

ZA Force Field Won't Install

I have purchased and installed Force Field but, when I try to run setup I get a message saying it is "not compatible with this version of Windows". I have Win7 x 64bit Home Premium. I've deleted the setup file and redownloaded with the same result. I tried live chat but no response after 10 mins, so pretty fed up :mad:

Synology and ZoneAlarm

I have ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 9.3.014 and am using a Synology DiskStation DS210j NAS. This uses 2 pieces of software (Synology Assistant and Disk Replicator) for management and backups. As far as I can understand, these use ports 9997-9999.

All was well on WinXP. I upgraded to Win7 and the above two S/W packages could no longer contact the NAS. Disabling the firewall did not help. Completely uninstalling ZA allows the Synology S/W to work, so I know it is ZA interfering in some way.

The NAS is in the trusted zone, so I would expect the UDP broadcasts from the NAS on ports 9997-9999 to be allowed. However, I can only get the Synology Assistant to recognise the NAS if I explicitly put in an expert rule for TCP/UDP packets from the NAS IP to ports 9997-9999. (Interestingly, if I try and add this rule as a group, I get a BSOD with a buffer overrrun :eek:).

So, ZA doesn't appear to be doing what it says on the tin in this case and I have to explicitly re-add a rule which should be covered by the trusted zone catch all (this appears to be different behaviuor between ZA on WinXP and Win7).

I now have Synology Assistant working (which allows basic management functions). However, I still can't get Disk Replicator working (it cannot find the NAS), which is the backup software. This is all the more frustrating as ZA isn't logging what it is blocking (I only get the logging of the successful broadcast to 255.255.255.255:9999 from the NAS in response to the Synology Assistant query because I added the expert rule). The only thing I see is in the Program log entry for Backup.exe (Disk Replicator) source IP 0.0.0.0:9998 - Incoming (listen) and allowed.

I've now added another rule for TCP/UDP packets source IP 0.0.0.0, ports 9997-9999. Now, the NAS can be seen, :D, however it can't see any of the shared folders (that it could see on WinXP). As a side note, I can see and write to shared folders from Windows Explorer.

For good (??) measure, I've set up the Synology apps to allow everything and be super trusted.

UPDATE - Drat and double drat. Just tried both Synology Assistant and Disk Replicator again and neither can find the NAS and there is no logging at all.

Can anyone help on setting up ZA to allow Synology Disk Replicator to work? Failing that, can anyone help to force the logging to show what is blocked? (NB - I have logging set to High/On). My impression is that ZA is somewhat flakey handling UDP authorisation under Win7

How long should a full scan take?

Every time I run a full scan on my Hp dv7 1175 (dual processor 4 gigs of ram) I end up aborting it after 4 to 8 hours. It always indicates that it is 58% done and always is working in the Windows/temp folder on files with the name PR*****.tmp. The * indicates hex values 0 thru f.

There are over 60 thousand of these files taking up over 30 gigabytes.

Does anyone know what is creating these files and is it safe to delete them?

Zone Alarm and Trend Micro

I have Trend Micro Internet Security installed on my PC (and I wish to keep it) but want to use zone alarm (free version) as my Firewall.
I have uninstalled the firewall from Trend micro and attempted to install Zonealarm but it's telling me that it has detected TM on my system and I need to uninstall it first.
Can I remove TM, install ZA and then reinstall TM or are the two no longer compatible?
I will have to search a little for my TM registration though as I'm not at all sure where it is now so I want to make certain that the two can run together otherwise I'm looking at buying a new virus scanner which I can't really afford at the moment.

"New Network" Issues and missing entries in ZA firewall zone

This thread, http://forums.zonealarm.com/showthread.php?t=75210, is closed but I would like to add something.

This morning I restarted my computer and I got the Zone Alarm window informing me of a new network, 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0, again. There are only two options, to make it an internet zone or a trusted zone. I opted to make it an internet zone.

When I opened the Control Center, all of the zones I had previously created were gone. The ONLY zone listed was the new one just added. I was able to access web pages but not other computers on my network.

I was concerned that the Local Host and DHCP server were not listed any longer and I decided to follow the reset instructions given by Guru in the thread referenced above.

As ZA was resetting, the "New Network" was found again so I set it to trusted this time. In the Control Center, I now have these:

New Network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 Network Trusted
Mapped Drive 192.168.1.140 IP Address Trusted
DHCP Server 192.168.1.1 IP Address Trusted

There is no listing for Local Host as there was initially. Is there anything to be concerned about or to do here? Thanks.
